IRA Charitable Distribution

Many at Ankeny First age 70.5 years or older have been able to reduce their tax bill by making a charitable donation directly from their IRA. And while we don’t give solely to reap tax benefits, giving smartly enables you to increase your generosity, and have more left over to steward for other purposes.

Additionally, if you are age 73 or older, you can instruct your IRA custodian to distribute all or a portion of your Required Minimum Distribution directly to Ankeny First and/or other qualified charities and avoid paying taxes on the RMD. Below is a linked form to download with instructions for your IRA custodian. Information your IRA custodian needs is the church’s address (206 SW Walnut Street, Ankeny, IA 50023) and the church’s tax ID (42-0745976). Instruct the custodian to make the check payable to Ankeny First United Methodist Church. Start the conversation early to ensure your gift arrives to Ankeny First before December 31st.

Discipleship Ministries of the United Methodist Church has also published a helpful informational brochure for those considering qualified charitable distributions. Please note, however, that effective January 1st, 2023, the age to start taking Required Minimum Distributions increased from 72 to 73. Discuss this option for giving with your trusted family and professional advisors to find out if it may be a smart fit for your personal situation.
